President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with key political figures from Rivers State in a bid to address and resolve the prolonged political crisis in the state.
The meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule; and other lawmakers from the state.
This development follows Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, which led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state House of Assembly due to escalating insecurity and a breakdown in cooperation among the state’s leadership.
Thursday’s gathering is part of ongoing reconciliation efforts led by the Presidency to restore peace and political stability in the state. Photographs released from the meeting showed Tinubu engaging with Fubara, Wike, Amaewhule, and other legislators in what appeared to be a cordial atmosphere.
Earlier reports indicated that Governor Fubara also held a separate meeting in Abuja with the suspended Speaker and other aggrieved lawmakers. Multiple sources confirmed that the session ended amicably, with Fubara and Amaewhule seen smiling, holding hands, and sharing moments of laughter.
The meeting is seen as a significant step toward mending the fractured political landscape in Rivers State.
