The national grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, leading to a blackout in several parts of the country.
This was confirmed in a public notice issued by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on its official X handle.
According to AEDC, the power outage occurred at 11:23 am following a loss of supply from the national grid, affecting electricity distribution across its franchise areas.
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the notice read.
The company assured customers that efforts were ongoing to restore the grid. “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” AEDC stated.
In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times and over 100 times within the last decade. Earlier this year, in February, the grid also collapsed, plunging many Nigerians into darkness.
Following repeated collapses, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April granted approval to six firms and a private university to generate and distribute electricity.
Despite this, NERC’s July report stated that there was no record of power system collapse or disturbance in the first quarter of 2025.
