Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has honoured his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, by commissioning a hostel named after her at Clifford University in Abia State.
The singer arrived at the university with members of his 30BG crew and nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest to unveil the project, an event that drew excitement from students and fans present.
Speaking at the ceremony, Davido described the hostel as a tribute to his mother’s legacy as a teacher, philanthropist, and advocate for education. He said her belief in compassion and learning shaped his outlook on life and continues to guide his music and humanitarian efforts.
According to him, the project represents not only a personal tribute but also a symbol of hope for young Africans pursuing their dreams and striving to make a positive impact in society.
“Standing before the graduating class of Clifford University today giving the commencement speech, I felt something bigger than music. I saw a generation ready to change everything,” Davido said.
“When I looked into their faces, I saw the same fire that built me — that hunger to be seen, to make something out of nothing, to turn pain into power. I told them that talent might open the door, but purpose gives it meaning,” he added.
Davido also spoke about the importance of using influence and platforms to inspire others, emphasizing that true greatness is measured by impact, not just numbers.
He paid tribute to his late mother, describing her as a woman who believed that education and compassion could change lives. “Everything I am — the music, the drive, the heart — came from her,” he said.
“Walking through that building, seeing the smiles of the students who will live there, I realized this was more than a tribute. It was a continuation of her purpose, turning love into legacy, one life at a time,” he added.
The singer concluded by dedicating the moment to his mother and to all young Africans chasing their dreams, reaffirming his belief in the principle of lifting others to rise together.
Davido’s wife, Chioma, reacted to the video of the event on social media, describing it as “so beautiful.”
