The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NBA-AMLC) has reinforced its commitment towards combating financial crimes across the bar in the southwest region.
This was disclosed by Motolani Oyedeji (Esq) of the NBA Abeokuta Branch, who is also the Managing Partner at Danielle Chambers, during a one- day workshop, with the theme, “Intensive Training to Champion AML/CFT Compliance Across the Bar”, was held on Friday at Lagos State.
According to Oyedeji, by taking another bold step in making a difference, she has completed an intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop focused on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) compliance.
Meanwhile, the critical one-day workshop was organised by the African Centre for Governance, Asset Recovery, & Sustenance Development, in collaboration with the NBA Anti-Money Laundering Committee (AMLC), was put together for the Southwest Region and equipped selected legal professionals to serve as compliance champions across all NBA branches.
Oyedeji said, “The mandate is clear, the legal profession must be shielded from being misused as a channel for illicit financial flows, as such legal practitioners must be protected by doing all it takes, most especially on Due Diligence and reporting mechanisms.
“The training provided practical, hands-on knowledge on implementing the Risk-Based Approach (RBA), conducting mandatory Client Due Diligence (CDD), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) and utilising the innovative NBA-AML Web Portal for compliance monitoring and secure reporting.”
Also, Oyedeji, who is now tasked with cascading this essential compliance knowledge to hundreds of legal practitioners within the NBA Abeokuta Branch and beyond, has ensured that the bar maintains the highest ethical standards and actively contributes to the national fight against corruption and financial crime, while citing the collective effort is expected to significantly boost the integrity of the Nigerian financial system and enhance the country’s standing in the global community.
However, this initiative marks a major step in the ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and accountability within the Nigerian legal space, while this opportunity was made possible through the robust support of the Branch leadership, led by Chief Kayode Aderemi (Esq), Chairman of the NBA Abeokuta Branch.
Among those in attendance at the workshop, were; Chief Kayode Aderemi (Esq), Chairman, NBA Abeokuta Branch, Motolani Oyedeji (Esq), representing the NBA Abeokuta Branch, while also in attendance, were members of the NBA from the Otta, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro Branches, from Ogun State.
