Newcastle United boosted their Premier League campaign with a 2–1 win over Manchester City on Saturday, as Harvey Barnes scored twice to hand the champions a costly defeat at St James’ Park.
Barnes opened the scoring in the second half before Ruben Dias equalised for City. Moments later, Barnes restored Newcastle’s lead with a controversial second goal that was upheld after a lengthy VAR review for a possible offside involving Bruno Guimaraes.
City had earlier appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after Phil Foden went down under a challenge from Fabian Schar, adding to Pep Guardiola’s frustration on a day when his team struggled to convert chances.
The defeat—City’s fourth in the league this season—left them third on the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
Erling Haaland, who was aiming for his 100th league goal in England, failed to score and missed several chances. Newcastle capitalised, securing only their second league win over City in their last 36 meetings.
The match began with an early scare for City when goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted possession to Barnes, but the Newcastle winger fired straight at him. At the other end, Haaland scuffed a clear opportunity after rounding Nick Pope.
Both sides created chances but were let down by wasteful finishing. Donnarumma made key saves from Nick Woltemade, while Foden and Haaland both missed from close range. Barnes also squandered a major chance with the goal wide open.
Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock in the 64th minute as Barnes drilled in a low shot from the edge of the area. Dias brought City level shortly after with a deflected strike, but Newcastle hit back immediately.
Woltemade’s header set up Guimaraes, whose effort struck the bar before Barnes reacted quickest to volley in the rebound. After a lengthy VAR check, the goal stood.
The victory marked Eddie Howe’s first Premier League win over Manchester City and eased pressure following back-to-back defeats before the international break.
