The Senate has passed the National Emergency Toll Service (NETS) Establishment Bill 2025 through second reading.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua (Katsina Central), aims to create a unified, accessible, and rapid emergency response system using a three-digit, toll-free number available across the country. It also empowers the Nigerian Communications Commission to regulate the service and enhance coordination of emergency response nationwide.
The legislation received overwhelming support from lawmakers during Tuesday’s plenary.
Amid growing national security concerns, the Senate also announced major changes to several standing committees, fulfilling its earlier commitment to reconstitute the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
The announcement was made by the Senate Selection Committee chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Under the new arrangement, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi State has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. He previously chaired the Committee on National Planning.
The Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry has also been restructured, with Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi State named its new Chairman. Senator Buba was last week removed as Chairman of the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
In another adjustment, Senator Mustafa Musa of Yobe State has been appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Planning.
The Senate Committee on Air Force was also reorganized, with Senate Minority Whip Osita Ngwu of Enugu State taking over as Acting Chairman. He previously served as Deputy Chairman before former Chairman Senator Akwashiki became indisposed.
Senate leadership said the reconstitution of the committees is aimed at strengthening oversight functions and improving response to emerging national security challenges.
