Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening support for security agencies operating in the state.
Fubara made the pledge on Thursday at the Government House in Port Harcourt during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was in the state as part of a nationwide tour to assess naval commands and formations.
“You don’t need to thank us because it is our responsibility as a government to ensure that agencies operating in our territory receive the support they need to succeed,” Fubara said.
He noted that the Nigerian Navy plays a crucial role in safeguarding the state’s coastal and waterway infrastructure, especially its strategic crude oil distribution lines.
“You know how strategic Rivers State is. It is the centre of our crude oil. Most major distribution lines originate from Rivers State, and these lines are located in coastal zones. You are helping us prevent loss of lives and destruction of the ecosystem,” he added.
The governor commended previous administrations for maintaining strong collaboration with the Navy and assured continued cooperation.
“My promise has never changed. We must work together for progress. We will continue to collaborate and ensure we play our part so that you can succeed,” he said.
Fubara also acknowledged recent changes in naval leadership in the state, expressing optimism that the incoming commander would maintain a cordial working relationship with the government.
Earlier, Vice Admiral Abbas described Rivers State as a strategic hub for national security, noting that several key energy installations and naval training facilities are situated there.
“I have most of the critical energy hubs domiciled in this state. Part of my responsibility is to ensure these national assets are safe because the nation relies on them,” Abbas said.
He expressed gratitude to the state government for its support, including the provision of six gunboats and infrastructural assistance to boost naval operations.
“We are sincerely grateful, and I plead that you continue to support us as you have always done,” he added.
