Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday inaugurated the newly appointed Governing Council of Lagos State University (LASU), urging members to uphold integrity and provide strong academic leadership.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Lagos House, Ikeja, and was attended by senior government officials, university executives and key stakeholders in the state’s tertiary education sector.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described LASU as a cornerstone institution for nurturing young talent and enhancing Lagos State’s academic reputation locally and globally. He expressed confidence in the ability of the new council to offer focused, principled and visionary leadership.
“I am confident that this council will guide the university with integrity, dedication and a steadfast commitment to excellence,” the governor said, stressing that effective governance is critical to the sustained growth of the institution.
Among the dignitaries present were the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN); Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Olabode Agoro; and Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule. The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and other senior university officials were also in attendance.
Sanwo-Olu congratulated Babatunde Ogala (SAN) on his appointment as Chairman of the Governing Council, along with other members, including Remi Desalu, who were sworn in and took their oaths of office during the ceremony.
The governor said the new council would be responsible for steering LASU through reforms and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening academic standards, boosting research output and improving student welfare.
He expressed optimism about the university’s future, stating that he looked forward to LASU’s continued growth as one of Nigeria’s leading universities with increasing global relevance.
