Super Eagles defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s ability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a slow start in the qualifiers.
Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C of the African qualifiers, with seven points. The group is led by South Africa, who have 13 points, followed by Rwanda and the Benin Republic.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Benin, Osayi-Samuel remained optimistic about the team’s chances and highlighted the players’ alignment with the vision of head coach Eric Chelle.
“I still think we can qualify. The aim is just to win every single game. We believe in our team. Though it will be difficult, but for us and the team, I think we have a good chance,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles are facing increasing pressure to recover in Group C and secure a qualification slot.
Osayi-Samuel stressed that the team’s mindset and unity are key to overcoming their current position.
He also praised the leadership of head coach Eric Chelle, describing him as a “fantastic coach” whose approach has resonated well with the squad.
“For me, the coach is fantastic. The way he wants us to press and run; I think everyone in the team is aligned to his ideas,” the Fenerbahçe defender said.
Citing the team’s recent performance as a sign of improvement, he said, “In our last game against Russia, we contained a team that has not lost in six or seven matches. If we keep working together, we have a good chance.”
The Super Eagles will continue their qualification campaign with renewed focus, hoping to close the gap in Group C and secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.
