The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has described the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, as a revered icon whose legacy will be deeply missed.
In a statement issued on Monday, Adams extended his condolences to the family of the late monarch, the Ogun State Government, and all Ijebu people both at home and in the diaspora.
He noted that Oba Adetona’s distinguished leadership and moral authority made him a respected figure across the Yoruba race and the nation.
Adams recalled that Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers. He said the monarch’s reign brought about unity, progress, and development in Ijebuland and significantly promoted Yoruba cultural heritage.
“The late Awujale symbolised unity, progress, and cultural pride for the Ijebu and the Yoruba people,” Adams stated.
He further described Oba Adetona as a proud custodian of Yoruba culture who stood tall among traditional rulers across Nigeria.
Adams also highlighted the monarch’s relentless advocacy for the creation of Ijebu State, noting that despite health challenges, Oba Adetona visited President Bola Tinubu earlier in the year to advance the cause.
He praised the late monarch’s contributions to the unity and development of Yoruba land and said his passing marks the end of a remarkable era.
