Two people have lost their lives in separate road accidents that occurred along the LASU-Igando Road and the Osborne Expressway in Lagos State.
A truck driver involved in one of the incidents was arrested by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after his vehicle lost control and hit a pedestrian on the Osborne Expressway, killing the victim instantly.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the truck’s brakes failed while in motion along Simpson Street, inward Ikoyi, on the Osborne Expressway near the Traffic Light Junction.
He explained that the driver, while trying to avoid hitting other vehicles, lost control and rammed into a pedestrian walking by the roadside.
“The fatal incident occurred when the truck, reportedly travelling at excessive speed, suffered a brake failure. In a bid to prevent a collision, the driver lost control and hit a pedestrian, killing the victim instantly,” Taofiq said.
LASTMA officers arrived promptly, securing the area to prevent further accidents and ease traffic flow. The driver was later handed over to the police for further investigation, while the victim’s body was taken to the morgue in Ebute Metta.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the deceased’s family and advised truck drivers to conduct routine vehicle maintenance.
In a separate incident on the LASU-Igando Road, one person died after a passenger bus rammed into a broken-down truck.
Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the crash occurred when a commercial bus collided with a faulty Private Sector Participant (PSP) truck that was abandoned on the fast lane of the Obadore Bridge without warning signs.
He said, “A Mazda commercial bus loaded with passengers crashed into the broken-down truck. The bus driver died on the spot, while others sustained injuries.”
The injured passengers were taken for medical treatment, and the wrecked bus was moved to the Obadore Police Station.
Similar incidents have been recorded in the state, with truck brake failures repeatedly leading to fatalities on Lagos roads.
